Bened Biomedical developed the psychobiotic PS128, and, according to recent clinical trials, PS128 drastically improves insomnia, stress, and anxiety disorders. The participants in this clinical trial were IT practitioners experiencing severe career-life stress.
Psychobiotics include probiotics that produce certain benefits for mental health. Meanwhile, PS128, a variant of Lactobacillus plantarum, has previously shown recovery benefits in preclinical models, and this study proves its efficacy on human health, especially for anxiety, stress and sleep disorders.
“Thanks to PS128, various people can sleep more soundly at night and have a good mood every day. For that, we are happy to present this product,” said Dr. Alain Delpy, Head of Global Development, Bened.
A number of proven benefits for mental and physical health
The study, published in Frontiers in Nutrition in March, involved 36 people who took PS128 daily for eight weeks. Throughout this period, many benchmarks have changed drastically. Study participants reported greater energy levels and positive emotions, as well as a better quality of life and psychological health. A number of benefits were seen in the severity of insomnia, anxiety disorders, work-related stress, negative emotions, and gastric symptoms.
“We are very happy to witness a number of positive benefits for humans, and this proves results that have previously been proven in the preclinical stage. PS128 is very useful in a world that generates great pressure, high stress, and lots of anxiety,” explained Delpy.
Probiotics impact health through a pathway known as the “gut-brain axis”. According to one theory, PS128 interacts in the gut, and a number of molecules are produced, which then make their way directly to the brain via the bloodstream or nerves. Several previous studies have shown that rats that were given PS128 intake turned out to have more serotonin and dopamine. This is related to a number of benefits that the study has proven.
Reducing stress hormones
The study also tested several important biomarkers in the participants’ saliva that indicated stress levels. One of them, cortisol, which decreased dramatically during the study.
“The decrease in cortisol levels may be the most important result of this experiment,” said Dr. Allen Wu, who heads Bened’s research lab. “These results prove the real changes that PS128 produces in the body, namely a number of changes that can be experienced and felt by the human mind.”
PS128 is made from natural ingredients and plants, and has GRAS status as determined by a board of internal experts (self-affirmed). Several previous clinical trials have shown that high levels of psychobiotics can reverse symptoms of neurological disorders such as Parkinson’s, autism, and depression.
As a party that continues to develop research on the “gut-brain axis”, Bened is a global ODM looking for new partners to expand the availability of PS128 in international markets.
