dr. Anton Dharma Saputra, SpA, stated that probiotics are beneficial for various diseases and conditions in children, starting from maintaining the health of the gastrointestinal tract, maintaining immunity, to having a positive effect on mental health. “There have been many studies that prove the benefits of probiotics in various diseases and conditions of children, but there are several roles that still require further research,” he said in the webinar “Understanding the Relationship between Digestive and Emotional Health in Children from Early Childhood” which was attended in Jakarta, Friday (7 /10/2022).
Anton who is a member of the Indonesian Pediatrician Association (IDAI) explained, probiotics are good organisms that will have a good impact on health as long as they are in sufficient quantities. Several types of probiotics are lactobacillus found in fermented foods such as yogurt and good bacteria around the areola.

He stated, probiotics also reduce the risk of respiratory and digestive tract infections, thereby reducing the risk of allergies. Not only that, probiotics also support the growth and development of malnourished children and help prevent obesity. Probiotics, he said, also treat constipation, but if you want to be used as a guideline, further research is still needed because the results are still varied.
“Probiotics have also been shown to be useful for reducing regurgitation (rising of stomach contents into the throat). However, again this has not become a routine recommendation in the management of GERD and further research is needed,” he added.
As for mental health, he said, probiotics play an important role in controlling behavior and are useful in mental disorders, as well as supporting cognitive function and influencing emotions. “Simply like this, if for example you see a child who is often sick, it will definitely affect the growth and development of the child because of the illness, the pain,” he said.
“In addition, there are studies in animals, that long-term administration of probiotics has a positive impact on the brain and behavior. Longum 1714 bacteria has anti-stress properties and pro-cognitive effects when tested on agitated mice,” said Anton Dharma Saputra.
