New Probiotic with Official Health Claims from Health Canada: Alleviating Stress and Enhancing Quality of Life

Health Canada has given the green light to Chr Hansen’s probiotic DDS-1 strain, acknowledging its ability to ease perceived stress and enhance the quality of life in adolescents and adults dealing with irritable bowel syndrome

Niklas Larsson, PhD, Head of Scientific Affairs at Chr. Hansen Human Health, expressed excitement about this validation. Larsson highlighted the significance of this authorization, emphasizing the scientific backing and credibility it adds to their product within the emerging field of the gut-brain axis.

The gut-brain axis, an area of cutting-edge research, denotes the bidirectional connection between the GI tract and the nervous system. Specific strains, like Chr. Hansen’s L. acidophilus DDS-1, are capable of producing essential neurotransmitters such as GABA, serotonin, and dopamine.

In the realm of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), individuals often experience feelings of sadness, embarrassment, and self-consciousness, profoundly impacting their quality of life and social engagement.

Previously authorized by Health Canada to alleviate abdominal pain severity and symptomology in IBS among adolescents and adults, Chr. Hansen’s DDS-1 strain has now expanded its scope. The amended Natural Health Product license in Canada now includes claims pertaining to the gut-brain axis:

  • Eases perceived stress in adolescents and adults dealing with irritable bowel syndrome.
  • Enhances the quality of life in adolescents and adults with irritable bowel syndrome.
  • Alleviates perceived stress while also improving abdominal pain in adolescents and adults with irritable bowel syndrome.
  • Normalizes stool consistency for adolescents and adults dealing with irritable bowel syndrome.

Linda Neckmar, SVP of Chr. Hansen Human Health, emphasized that these approved claims provide consumers with valuable information for making informed health choices regarding probiotics. It also solidifies the trust in the effectiveness, safety, and quality of their products. Neckmar anticipates that these officially registered health claims will fuel increased interest in their clinically documented probiotics, showcasing their potential benefits not only in Canada but also in other markets.
